New Beer Styles?
Posted by Dave on January 1, 2020 at 5:16 pmHappy New Year to all my fellow homebrewers. Each year it seems that a new or different beer style comes out that becomes very popular for a while. One year it was heavily hopped IPAs, another year it was high ABV stouts and porters, recently it was hazy New England IPAs. What are everyone’s predictions for what style will dominate the year 2020?

This is a great question! We’re really excited to see everyone’s predictions! It might not be this year, but I think we’re going to see an increased demand for lagers in general in small craft breweries before too long. Craft beer has been largely dominated by ales for years and I bet we see that shift a bit over the next year.
I thought it would’ve come back already, but I think the natural response to high ABV hazy IPAs and imperial stouts will be an increase in breweries serving more traditional lagers and low ABV/session beers.
I think we’ll see more sours. They got big in 2019 but I think we’ll see them continue to increase and become staples.
Not beer, but I think we’ll see most breweries jump on the seltzer bandwagon. I bet in 2020 almost every brewery will have a couple on tap. It’s incredibly cheap to make so I imagine the margins are pretty good, and it helps serve people who don’t drink beer.
I’m going to say either Crisp/Clean Lagers (~4%) or Half-Sour Pale Ales/IPA, which is basically a kettle sour that is done for half the amount of time and then dry hopped.
Pilsners and kettle sours!
I agree on the lagers. I think classic clean lagers kolsch pilsner and helles are going to really come around this year.
One fad I thought of yesterday that didn’t seem to last long is the brut ipa
I think maybe more wheat beers, maybe dark wheat beer.
100% it will be craft lagers. Great lagers are difficult to master, and impossible to hide flaws in. I think it’ll be the next obvious challenge for a lot of smaller micro breweries to produce these consistently.
