  • Best Kveik Strain?

Posted by William on March 23, 2020 at 3:37 pm

Starting to see yeast producers shut down because of COVID-19 and was thinking this would be a good time to get into brewing with kveik because it’s so easy to dry and keep a bank of yeast.

What is the best strain of kveik to use?

I’ve used Voss and Hornindall. Both were great but I prefer Voss, at least for an IPA. It adds an amazing juicy/tropical aroma/flavor and fermented out faster at around 90F.

I have gotten super into kveik yeast. I’ve used Hornindal, Hothead, and Voss. Hornindal is best for porters, stouts, wee heavies, etc. Hothead was fine, but Hornindal is amazing compared to it so I probably won’t use it again. Voss is good for pale ales, IPAs, etc. It ferments really clean and doesn’t lend much to the beer, but it’s a good yeast.

Oslo is my favorite for clean neutral fermentation. I like Voss the best for IPAs, especially more tropical hazy ones.
